What's Up In The Community?

The tech landscape is changing fast. To help you stay on top of the game, our Technology Team has picked top news, releases, and stories from the world of React and React Native.

New Tools & Releases

  • Re.Pack V5 Preview is here, bringing significant performance improvements by switching from Webpack to Rspack. Enjoy faster cold start times (15s → 2.5s), cold builds (10s → 2s), and HMR (450ms → 100ms). Try it now with npx @callstack/repack-init@next. And if you like to stick with stable versions, v4.1 just landed with Bridgeless and full New Architecture support.
  • React Compiler was open-sourced at React Conf and first products outside of Meta are starting to integrate it, showing reduced lag in rich text, faster field loads, smoother animations, and out-of-the-box improvements for PayloadCMS. There are also reports of edge cases that the compiler still can't handle (let's mention that it's still experimental).
  • The stable release of react-native-video v6.0.0 brings a host of new features and improvements, including full TypeScript support, notification controls for playback, and compatibility with visionOS. It also replaces ExoPlayer2 with AndroidX Media3, enhances performance, and adds new APIs for device capabilities.
  • If you're into animations and microinteractions, you'll enjoy this Chaos Button in SwiftUI. The source is available on GitHub for developers to explore and integrate. But can it be done in React Native, William?

Other Tech News

  • React Conf 2024 brought together over 700 attendees in Henderson, Nevada, marking the first in-person event since 2019. Key announcements included the React 19 RC, React Native New Architecture Beta, and an experimental React Compiler release.

Highlights also featured community-driven projects like React Router v7 and React Server Components in RedwoodJS. Full event streams are available online. We proudly co-hosted the event 🙌 See you next time!

  • React Server Components will soon be available on all platforms via Expo Router. A powerful AI app demo showcases the new possibilities by rendering interactive native views from a server. This marks a big advancement in the future of mobile apps.
  • The team behind Replicache and Reflect is working on Zero, a general-purpose sync engine for the web, which aims to simplify the modern stack for local-first apps specifically. There's not much to share yet, but we stay interested.
