New Tools & Releases
- Welcome React Native Bottom Tabs, the first Bottom Tab Navigator built using native platform primitives for both Android and iOS! 🥳 With an API surface that's nearly a drop-in replacement for the JavaScript version, it's designed to provide seamless integration with minimal adjustments. Expo Router is also supported.
- Deno 2.0 has officially landed, bringing long-awaited backward compatibility with Node.js, npm and package.json (thank you Bun) and a lot of other incremental improvements. The update aims to attract existing Node.js developers and focuses on stability, introducing LTS releases. It also features one of the coolest framework commercials.
- React Compiler now has an experimental package to support React 18 and 17, react-compiler-runtime so you don't have to patch React yourself.
- A message from another universe: Tauri released v2.0. This version improves hot module replacement, a new plugin system, and mobile support for iOS and Android, making Tauri enter a cross-platform game. Worth keeping an eye on for future updates.
- Meet One, a new React framework for web and native, built on Vite. It aims for simpler code, better results, and a single codebase for web, iOS and Android. Brought to the world by the creator of Tamagui.
- ESLint has expanded its capabilities to include official support for linting JSON and Markdown. With the new eslint/json and eslint/markdown plugins, you can now enforce best practices across these formats. The plugins feature built-in rules and allow for custom rule creation, making it easier to maintain code quality in various languages.
- Meta has recently unveiled new Llama vision models for their Meta AI. New functionalities are designed to further enrich communication on Meta's platforms in scenarios like captioning images for accessibility, providing natural language insights based on data visualizations.
- The latest release of Radon IDE (previously known as React Native IDE), v0.20 beta is out now, bringing a range of new features. You can now enjoy video replays, a dimensions popup in the inspector, customizable build configurations, and added EAS support 🪐-all aimed at improving development efficiency.
Other Tech News
- React Native's TextInput is flawed when used in controlled mode and Nick Gerleman saves the day fixing it for the new arch. Thank you Dan Abramov, who got fed up with the status quo and decided to update the official documentation to avoid using controlled TextInput.
- Looking to speed up Android builds? Disable the Jetifier tool responsible for converting libraries to AndroidX. The majority of libraries have already migrated, so you no longer need Jetifier. Applying this together with other optimization techniques, we improved Expensify's Android app rebuild times from minutes to seconds 🚀
- A new series of quick tutorial videos brought by Expo is now available to complement the recently updated written tutorials. The nine**-part series** covers everything from creating your first app to handling platform differences and configuring the status bar.
- CodePush has officially open-sourced its server, allowing developers to deploy and manage updates independently from App Center. Fully compatible with the React Native Client SDK, this move comes six months ahead of App Center's shutdown, offering an alternative path for continuous app delivery. We'll discuss it on our podcast soon, so stay tuned!
- At Meta Connect 2024, Meta shared insights into its use of React Native across its Mixed Reality ecosystem. The talk highlighted how React Native has powered key mobile experiences (they rebuilt Instagram in React Native for Meta Quest!) and the continued investment in the framework's performance and developer tooling.
- In case you missed it, we recently shared a blog post on how to simplify your iOS brownfield integration with RootViewFactory. This solution makes it easier to introduce React Native to existing native iOS apps and to manage multiple React Native entry-points, helping to streamline the integration process. If you're working on brownfield apps, this one's for you.
